From my recent series of medicinal plant fairies.
Kohekohe is a womb healer. She is one of Aotearoa’s large native trees, found mostly in the North Island. She supports menstrual health, helps relieve cramps, eases symptoms of endometriosis and menopause, balances hormones, regulates menstrual cycles, aids in postpartum healing and more.
Unlike most trees, she flowers in late autumn to early winter. Her small white and green flowers are shaped like stars. She can be harder to identify when she isn’t in flower, so it is helpful to remember her large glossy leaves always grow in opposite pairs along the stem, with a single leaflet at the tip (a pinnately compound formation). Her leaves have a very bitter taste, used for teas, tinctures and infusions in rongoā Māori.
